ETNOMATEMATIKA DAN NILAI-NILAI SOSIAL BUDAYA BATIK MAGELANG

Abstract

Batik is one of Indonesia’s cultural heritages with high artistic value, embodying philosophical, mathematical, and socio-cultural meanings. This study aims to describe the ethnomathematical concepts and socio-cultural values embedded in Magelang batik motifs. The research employed a descriptive approach, with data collected through observations, questionnaires, and interviews conducted in the Magelang City area. The findings reveal that Magelang batik motifs incorporate various ethnomathematical concepts, including translation, reflection, rotation, dilation, two-dimensional and three-dimensional geometric shapes, as well as counting, calculating, and measuring activities. Furthermore, each motif represents distinct socio-cultural values, such as environmental awareness in the Bayeman motif, mutual respect in the Wates motif, equality among people in the Diponegoro motif, gratitude in the Getuk motif, honesty in the Gunung Tidar motif, the importance of water resources for community life in the Water Tower motif, and environmental preservation through the increase of bird populations during harvest in the Gelatik motif. Based on these findings, Magelang batik should be further introduced and promoted through both online and offline media to enhance public awareness and appreciation of its existence as an important form of local cultural wisdom.
